Research
My research interest is focused on the Baltic Sea ocean climate system and the mechanisms of climate change. Monitoring of climate related parameters has been carried out in the Baltic Sea region over the past several hundred years (at least since the mid 18th century), and continues still today. Long instrumental series make the region particularly interesting for studies on climate change, climate sensitivity and climate variability. Using these series in combination with historical data and numerical modelling, I try to increase our knowledge of how salinity, temperature, ice extent and riverine freshwater discharge have varied through history, and how they will respond to a changing climate. Some key problems my research encompass are:
- Is the present climate in the region outside its natural borders of the past several hundred years?
- How large is the internal variability of the climate system in the region?
- What climate change can we attribute to anthropogenic effects?
- How will the heat balance of the Baltic Sea change?
- How much have the climate changed over the last 500 years?
- Was there a Little Ice Age in the Baltic Sea region?
- How will the ice extent change in the future?
- Has the Baltic Sea been covered with ice every winter over the past 500 years?
- Will a changing climate induce a fresher or saltier Baltic Sea?
- How has the riverine freshwater discharge changed over the past several hundred years and how is it linked to climate change?
