Research:

  • Geosphere Dynamics, especially the Baltic Sea Water, Energy and Mass transport. How does the Baltic Sea function and how will future changes in climate influence the Baltic Sea? To answer these questions we need to develop our understanding of water, energy and material cycles in the Baltic Sea. The coupling between the Baltic Sea and the atmosphere and surrounding land surfaces are also of major interest. The research takes an active part in the BALTEX, the MUSCAD and the EUR-OCEANS programs.

Key qualifications:

Prof. Anders Omstedt has participated actively in several national and international scientific bodies and has an active role in the BALTEX (Baltic Sea Experiment) and MUSCAD (MUlti proxy Studies of Climate Anno Domini) programs. He has been involved in the built-up phase of the Stockholm Marine Centre as a member of the board during 1990-1991 and 1993-1998. He was responsible for coordinating the BALTEX research within SMHI (1995-2001). Since 1996 he has been a member of the BALTEX Science Steering Group, since 1997 chairman of the Swedish IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme) and WCRP (World Climate Research Programme) Subcommittee for BALTEX and from 2000 a member of the Swedish National Committe for the IGBP and WCRP. At SMHI he was responsible for the BALTEX Ph. D. program, which included four Ph. D. students working on atmosphere, river-runoff and ocean modeling.
Anders Omstedt is since 2001 Professor at Göteborg University, Department of Earth Sciences: Oceanography. Earlier he was the Head of Oceanographic Research at SMHI and Visiting Professor at University of Göteborg having an extensive experience in ocean and lake modeling. His main work has been oriented towards the ocean climate and the physics of ice covered water bodies, in particularly the Baltic Sea and the polar oceans. He has developed several numerical models for cold water bodies such as rivers, lakes, estuaries, shelf seas and the polar oceans
